Forced To Flee

A global exhibition. This juried quilt exhibition, organized by Studio Art Quilt Associates, will premiere at the Ruth Funk Center for Textiles Arts. Other venues to be announced.

Throughout history people have been forced to flee from their homes for their own safety and survival due to war, oppression, natural disasters, and atrocious human rights violations. The 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees was adopted to address the increasingly growing numbers of people needing protection with the understanding that effective solutions would require international co-operation. That Convention document continues to influence the measures used today to attempt to address the global challenges arising from the current refugee crisis impacting countries across the globe.

Artists were encouraged to illustrate the issues surrounding the global refugee crises, impacts on families and communities, the stress placed on host countries, and the need for new initiatives, funding, and international cooperation to find solutions to the crisis. The selected pieces not only showcase the artworks, but also encourage the viewer to think deeply and carefully on this timely subject.

A minimum of $2,500 in cash awards plus additional art-related material awards will be presented at a free public reception in conjunction with Arts Fest, on Saturday, October 2oth from 5:15 pm to 7:00 pm, in the library’s lobby. The event will also feature live, sizzling music by Brazilwood Quartet and refreshments will be served.

Since its informal inception in 1912, the New Rochelle Art Association has included among its membership many talented and internationally known painters, illustrators and sculptors. The organization set formal goals among which were to “set an educational standard in the Fine Arts and promote interest in art in the community.”   The Association sponsored its first annual juried show to celebrate the opening of the community’s new library, then located on Main Street near Pintard Avenue. Some of the noted participants in that show of 140 entries included sculptor Robert Aitken, painters G. Glenn Newell, Remington Schuyler, A.G. Heaton, and illustrators Norman Rockwell, Joseph C. Leyendecker and Victor Forsythe.
